**The role**

We have an exciting opportunity to join the team as our new Data Science Technical Lead in the Australasia Region.

Data has always been a part of our work in the built and natural environment, and it’s increasingly at the core of what we do as a firm. We’re blending cutting edge data science techniques with our deep domain expertise to produce better outcomes for our clients, the environment, and society at large. This is all supported by our capabilities in data architecture and engineering, software development, and by cloud computing infrastructure which combines the best of open-source software and platform-as-a-service tools.

This role will sit in Arup's Data Services Team within our global Digital Technology Group, reporting to the Global Director of Data Science in the United Kingdom. It will work closely with the Digital Services Portfolio team in our Australasia region and beyond, and with colleagues in related disciplines, such as data engineering, software development, cloud infrastructure, product management etc. The role will bring additional senior technical expertise to the Australasia region.

**The responsibilities of this role include**:

- Provide the technical
- and team
- leadership for the firm's data science capability in the Australasia region.
- Support the bidding for and lead technical delivery of client projects with a significant data science component (or the data science component of larger projects).
- Increase the data science capability and capacity in region, in a manner that is aligned with the region’s strategy, operational plan, and performance.
- Oversee project delivery to ensure and strengthen technical excellence and adherence to best practices.
- Collaborate closely with initiatives globally and in other regions, including through the Data Services Team and the Digital Services Portfolio.
- Collaborate closely with leadership and practitioners in other Portfolios to drive execution of the Arup strategy.

**Requirements and skills**

**Essential skills and knowledge**
- Extensive prior experience as a data science practitioner, sufficient to provide technical leadership to the team and broader colleagues in the region. Technical stack to include Python, open-source data science frameworks, and major cloud environments.
- Extensive experience of leading delivery of data science projects, or the data science components of larger projects/programmes.
- Experience of supporting work-winning, such as bid writing, costing and budgeting, resource planning, etc.
- Experience of building and leading high-performing teams, including developing junior practitioners, mentoring, etc.
- The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholder groups, including senior executives, aligning with business strategy, and influencing outcomes.
- A Bachelors level degree, or equivalent, in a numerate discipline with strong statistical component.
- A passion for creating a more sustainable future, as expressed in Arup’s corporate strategy.

**Desirable skills and knowledge**:

- Working experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction sector / built & natural environment.
- Masters level degree and/or PhD in a numerate discipline/topic.
- Professional software development experience and best practices, e.g. test-driven development, agile methods
- Regional and matrix work experience is highly desirable.
