Work at an iconic Victorian landmark
- Ongoing, full time
- Cranbourne location
About our Organisation
Beyond their physical beauty, the Gardens contribute to global and local biodiversity knowledge, through research, discovery, protection, cultivation and restoration of rare and threatened plant species, both ex-situ and in the bushland, and as the insurance policy for a state's unique flora pre
- and post-bushfire recovery. RBGV is also the custodian of the $340 million State Botanical Collection, housed within the National Herbarium of Victoria, and is a hub for global plant knowledge, with internationally recognised biodiversity management and conservation research programs. The Gardens is also a steward for irreplaceable preserved plant collections, plant records, seeds and knowledge required for future generations to thrive; and is increasingly known for innovative engagement programs that highlight the role of nature in underpinning individual and community wellbeing, whilst fostering social inclusion for community benefit. It is also dedicated to stimulating conservation action and contributing to climate resilience, lifelong learning and unique memories for all visitors, at every stage of their lives.
About the Role
The Horticulturist (Irrigation) is responsible for providing technical support to deliver horticulture activities including garden maintenance, living plant collections curation, plant records, plant health and biosecurity. You will contribute to the achievement of branch objectives by delivering high quality recycled water to the Australian Garden through the operation and maintenance of the on-site reverse osmosis water treatment plant and the water reticulation system. In addition, the position will play an active role in supporting the Cranbourne Gardens Irrigation Working Group and associated efficient and effective irrigation delivery to the Australian Garden and Cranbourne Gardens production Nursery.
About You
You have demonstrated experience working in a large complex garden, with a strong history of horticultural practices, plant identification and curation. You are well versed in optimising plant-performance and understand the weed and pest identification and management practices. You have excellent attention to detail, and can record and monitor data and records, including maps and plant performance. You will have a trade/advanced certificate or other commensurate qualification in Water Industry Treatment, Horticulture or other relevant field. You have demonstrated technical skills in operating, managing and troubleshooting a large-scale automated irrigation system, as well as the monitoring and servicing of associated infrastructure. You understand the watering requirements of a large and diverse landscape and can solve problems as they arise. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills mean you can work effectively with your team, colleagues and interact with visitors. All other key selection criteria can be found in the position description, located under the attachments heading on the Vic Gov Careers website.
