**Who we are**

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.
These goals are to:
Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it.
Protect the Antarctic environment.
Understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system.
Undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes. The Assets and Technology Branch is currently undertaking an Antarctic Infrastructure Renewal Program (AIRP) for station-based infrastructure.

The Mechanical Section is a service-based group providing support to the Australian Antarctic Program through the provision of power generation, mobile plant and operational support.

**The Job**

The key responsibility of the Mechanical Supervisor AIRP, is to provide comprehensive, professional, trade specific expertise, knowledge and experience to assist in the procurement and ongoing support for mechanical mobile plant required to deliver AIRP. The role will also be required to contribute the Mechanical Section in providing support to Antarctic station-based, mobile and stationary machinery.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include:

- Provide operational, maintenance, compliance and safety/environmental risk management expertise for following:

- Construction equipment including cranes;
- Earth moving machinery and attachments;
- Light vehicles and;
- Other mechanical equipment (e.g. chainsaws, augers, etc).
- Provide advice on AIRP mobile plant procurement to ensure plant is suitable and fit for operation in Antarctica, including recommended spare parts holdings for operation in remote locations.
- Provide high level trade-specific leadership and support to station-based trade teams to successfully execute an allocated program of maintenance works:

- Supervise, manage, and lead the AIRP maintenance teams, both by remote management and on site in Antarctica if required.
- Oversee the resupply of parts and consumables for AIRP equipment on station.
- Take a leading role in fostering a strong technical safety culture and developing systems for safe work practices, whilst identifying more efficient and innovative ways to improve station processes.
- Be available for out of hours technical advice for trade staff on station for emergency or more complex technical issues
- Co-ordinate, develop and deliver training programs for AIRP Mechanical team.
- Provide advice on mobile plant maintenance strategies for AIRP plant:

- Write operational and maintenance manuals and manage plans, programs and schedules to deliver preventative maintenance, using the IBM Maximo computerised maintenance management system.
- Supporting the development of short, medium and long-term asset maintenance strategies for AIRP assets.
- Selecting, specifying and procuring materials and equipment according to an annual budget and organising delivery to station.
- Preparing and assessing tender, contract and procurement-related documentation.
- Allocating resources for the identified maintenance programs.
- Contribute to maintenance management improvement, including failure analysis, work practice development, spare parts provisioning, inventory management, management systems development and implementation.
- Identify asset replacement requirements.
- Coordinate technical competence assessment aspects for the recruitment, selection and training of trade or technical expeditioners, including:

- Assessing applicants.
- Developing selection reports.
- Developing safety training information and systems and providing training where required for expeditioners, prior to deployment.
- Conduct investigations into and report on incidents, equipment or maintenance practices and manage corrective actions through to completion.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with trade staff in Antarctica and with stakeholders including other AAD sections and external suppliers and consultants.
