**Term**: Full time, fixed term appointment of up to 2 years (part-time also considered)

This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to an innovative project being conducted as part of a large national investment to build digital infrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Postdoctoral/Research Fellow will work on the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA), which is developing digital infrastructure to federate language collections that exist across Australia, make them more readily findable and accessible, and ensure their long-term preservation. LDaCA is working with collections across different languages. A major focus for the ANU LDaCA team will be around Australian English data, but we may also be working with Australian migrant languages, Australian Indigenous languages, and languages of the region. LDaCA is led through the University of Queensland, and is being developed in collaboration with the NCRIS-funded Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and other key national partner institutions (University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Sydney, First Languages Australia and AARnet).

**Position overview**:
The purpose of this position is contribute to the development of this digital research platform, help to build up a community of users, and carry out research capitalising on, and showcasing, the capability of infrastructure like LDaCA for the analysis of digital language data.

This research-focused position provides an excellent opportunity for a dynamic scholar to contribute to the development of long-lasting digital infrastructure for language data at a time when the infrastructure is still in the process of being designed. This includes promoting the use of the infrastructure, though offering training, workshops, and engaging with a wide community of potential users. The position includes the opportunity to contribute to the teaching program in linguistics at ANU, in the scholar’s area of expertise.

The appointee will be based in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, and will form part of the local LDaCA team at ANU, and interact with LDaCA members and stakeholders nationwide. They will be supervised by Professor Catherine Travis, and will work closely with staff across ANU in the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) and the College of Asia and Pacific (CAP), in particular, in languages and linguistics, digital humanities, and other ANU initiatives for the development and enhancement of digital infrastructure. They will be expected to liaise broadly with academic and professional colleagues across the School, College, wider University community and external stakeholders.

**Linguistics at ANU**
Linguistics at ANU is internationally acclaimed in both research and teaching. Linguists at ANU conduct research that is helping to shape the field, seen for example in international rankings — ANU was ranked as the top university in Australia for Linguistics in the 2021 QS rankings (and 22nd in the world) — and in the large number of Fellows of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (nine) and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (three). Our research underpins a vibrant undergraduate teaching program and fosters a thriving community of undergraduate and graduate students.

The program has close ties with other areas of strength at ANU, in particular in languages. ANU teaches the largest number of languages of any university in Australia, and has strong commitment to Australian Indigenous languages, and to Indigenous scholars of Australia and the region. Linguistics is housed in two areas, the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics (College of Arts and Social Sciences) and the School of Culture, History and Language (College of Asia and the Pacific), and is affiliated with several research centres, including the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language, the Institute for Communication in Health Care, the Australian National Dictionary Centre, and the newly formed Evolution of Cultural Diversity Initiative.

**College overview**
The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is one of seven Colleges at ANU. The College, which is structured into two main research schools, offers degrees in more than 20 discipline areas and excels in research across the creative arts, humanities and social sciences. The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice.
