Within the National Plant Group, our team manages plant, rollingstock & equipment strategy, asset systems integration, asset reliability assurance, testing, commissioning, operations & maintenance. Currently, there is an Entry-Level Apprentice Plant Mechanic opportunity in our NSW Team based out of the Rutherford Workshop in Newcastle.
**About the role**
At John Holland we see our apprentices as our future rail leaders, and to start you off in your career you will complete the first stage of a structured learning and development program. The program is designed to supply you with the skills needed for a big future in our rail industry. As an apprentice, you will gain practical on the job training whilst receiving a formal trade qualification. The apprenticeship is typically four years with the ability to complete it earlier and John Holland will even cover the cost of your successful completion of the required TAFE units.
**Over the term of the apprenticeship, you’ll gain skills and experience with**:
- Identifying engine components such as drive and support systems
- Mobile plant braking systems, fluid power and steering systems
- Drive assembles and transmissions
- Electrical and electronic circuit systems
**Our Rutherford equipment fleet include**:
- Hi Rail/Road Rail vehicles & Plant
- Minor motorised/diesel
- and petrol-powered plant
- Light vehicles and small-mid size trucks
- Rail track re-sleeping and renewal equipment
- Large heavy rail machinery comprising of rail tampers and rail regulators
We may require you to travel around Newcastle, Sydney, and as far as regional NSW to conduct plant scheduled preventative services, urgent corrective works and/or plant equipment mechanical support on major construction projects and rail network possessions and outages.
This is a Monday to Friday role 6:00am - 2:30pm but may require overtime, shift work and occasionally some weekend work.
**To be successful in this key role, you must**:
- Have a valid C-class drivers’ licence (ability to drive manual and be able to provide your own transport to travel to and from work sites)
- Have a strong work ethic and encouraging attitude
- Be motivated and reliable
- An ability to undertake manual/physical work
- An ability to work at heights
- An ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team
- A familiar sense of Workplace Health & Safety
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- An ability to work calmly under pressure in tight deadlines
**It would be considered advantageous if you have a**:
- MR and/or HR Truck Drivers Licence
- Current Rail Industry Worker/Rail Industry Safety Induction card
- Current Construction Industry Induction card (White/Blue)
**The selection process will include**:
- Psychometric, Literacy and Numeracy assessments
- Reference checks
- Pre-employment CAT1 medical including drug & alcohol testing.
