**Your role**
Australian Unity is excited and proud to be partnering with Ramsay Connect to deliver the Diabetes Using Our Strengths Service (DUOSS) pilot research program. The DUOSS is an innovative virtual and face to face service that incorporates remote patient monitoring, optimising management of diabetes medicines, education, and group yarn ups to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders to manage their type 2 diabetes. The **Aboriginal Peer Learning Officer **will support First Nations Elders to engage in the Diabetes Using Our Strengths Service (DUOSS) and collaborate with the Diabetes Educator and Aboriginal Health Practitioner to support service delivery to participating Elders.
This is a** full-time fixed term role of 18 months**, with some travel to Bundjalung Country required.
The project is funded by MRFF funding from the Australian Government’s Targeted Translation Research Accelerator program, delivered by MTPConnect.
**About you**:
- Share their lived experience of managing diabetes with Elders
- Provide regular yarns with Elders via telephone or videocall
- Organise and engage Elders in various activities to support their health needs.
- Raise any concerns to clinical staff
- Support Elders with using technology
**Your expertise and qualifications will include**:
- A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and loves a good yarn
- Lived experience of diabetes, such as type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes
- Demonstrated computer skills and ability to provide troubleshooting advice to Elders on use of patient apps and health monitoring devices
**Desirable**:
- Experience in working in virtual care
- Living on Bundjalung Country
To perform this role, **it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person**. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
