About the County Court of Victoria
The County Court of Victoria is the principal trial court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears over 12,000 criminal, common law, and commercial cases each year. The Court's vision is to be a leader in court excellence, delivering the highest standard of justice to the community and inspiring public confidence in the rule of law.
About the County Koori Court
The County Koori Court was established as part of the County Court of Victoria pursuant to the County Court Amendments (Koori Court) Act 2008.
The Koori Court is the first sentencing Court for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders in a higher jurisdiction in Australia. It is a specialist court only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders who plead guilty, and that aims to achieve greater participation of the Victorian Aboriginal (Koori) community in the County Court sentencing process by creating a culturally appropriate environment and including Aboriginal Elders or Respected Persons, and Koori Court Officers, in the sentencing process.
About the role
The County Court is seeking an Associate to support the Judge in Charge of the County Koori Court, in chambers and in Court.
This is a unique role providing the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge of court process and advocacy while working closely with local community and Elders and Respected Persons. The successful applicant will gain a thorough working knowledge of legal principles and legislation in a dynamic and sensitive environment.
You will undertake interesting and varied work, including legal research, and will gain experience and knowledge of the inner workings of the Court.
The role requires a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism as you will be working closely with judges, court staff, legal practitioners and service providers.
This is a role for a recent law graduate, or legally qualified person starting their career in the law, with the intention of taking the Bar and becoming a barrister.

**How to Apply**:
This is an Aboriginal Designated position in accordance with Court Services Victoria's Designated Positions policy. This position is classified under ‘special measures', section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. To ensure that the intention of the recruitment process is maintained, a ‘Confirmation of Aboriginality' document is required from applicants.
