**Who we are**
Our role and functions are diverse. We work to enhance our agricultural, fisheries and forestry industries. We create new and maintain existing agricultural export opportunities, to provide gains for Australian agriculture. We manage biosecurity risks to Australia to protect our multi-billion-dollar agricultural industries and our way of life.
**The Program**
The Graduate Development Program is a 12-month program. Our graduates come from a broad range of backgrounds, study areas and work and life experiences. We are interested in all high achieving and motivated graduates.
We are one of Australia’s largest employers of veterinarians. Our stream within the Graduate Development Program aims to build your skills and career. In this program, you will support our national and international functions and responsibilities.
You will get to take advantage of the diverse work of the department through a variety of workplace rotations and structured learning. These may include both policy and operational work. Policy areas include setting international standards, animal health and biosecurity.
The program provides several benefits to graduates including:

**Please note** that Graduates commence at the APS 3 level ($71,444 per annum plus superannuation). Graduates may progress to the APS 4 level part way through the program following an assessment of their work performance. On successful completion of the program, we will assess you for advancement to the APS 5 level based on your work performance and an assessment of your skills and proficiencies at that level.

**Mandatory qualifications**
To be considered for these positions you must have a veterinary degree from an Australian university or equivalent veterinary qualification recognised in Australia. You must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the relevant Australian state/territory veterinary board and you must maintain this registration whilst employed by the department. Applicants should note that your registration fees will be paid by the department whilst you are employed in a veterinary position.
