We provide services across Victoria for adults and young people experiencing alcohol and other drug harms, family violence, mental health challenges and social disadvantage. Our Model of Care puts clients at the centre of what we do to create positive change in people's lives. We work with families, communities and other organisations to deliver trauma informed, equitable, culturally safe and integrated services based on evidence and practice wisdom.
About the program
The Aboriginal Wellbeing Program is funded by the Southeast Melbourne Primary Health Network in direct response to alcohol and other drug (AOD) harms in Frankston Mornington Peninsula’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island community.
The Aboriginal Wellbeing Worker works collaboratively with the community, key leaders, consumers and carers to increase awareness of the impact of AOD misuse, enhance awareness of referral pathways for support and create capacity individually, and as a collective, to improve overall wellbeing. The aim of the program is to consider the safety and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities engaging in AOD treatment.
About the role
The Aboriginal Wellbeing Worker will provide holistic wellbeing support, service navigation and build awareness of local supports whilst also building capacity within mainstream services to better respond to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island consumers and their families.
Outreach to community utilising existing resources and identified connection points.
Develop local pathways of support across sectors relating to identified health and wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island community members who are impacted by alcohol and other drugs.
Build an understanding of recovery and harm minimisation and available supports through psychoeducation (individual and group) and community engagement activities.
Provide brief assessment, support, and referral on an outreach basis to consumers and their family members in their own environment.
Undertake supported referrals to relevant specialist services and provide support and advocacy to overcome barriers to access.
Actively participate in developing and implementing innovative models of service delivery in response to community needs.
Provide secondary consultation and training and education/ information sessions in relation to alcohol and other dug issues and broader wellbeing needs, engaging specialists to support this where required.
Develop and maintain community support networks
**What we're looking for**:
Strong knowledge of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and relevant current practice related to supporting consumers with multiple needs and their families.
Demonstrated experience of at least 2 years in case managing individuals in the community or group facilitation with clients who present with multiple needs.
Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander diverse peoples, cultures, communities and practices and knowledge and understanding of Victorian Aboriginal services.
Excellent organisational skills, communication skills and the ability to work within a team.
Ability to maintain clear boundaries and engage in self-reflection.
High level interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening skills and clear speaking skills.
Case management skills and ability to write clear and professional case notes/handover notes and other essential documentation.
Minimum Diploma level qualification in relevant health and wellbeing field. An undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy, Social Work or counselling would be highly regarded.
Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs or related qualifications with core alcohol and drug competencies as per Government requirements (or willingness to undertake immediately).
Must identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
