**About the team**:
The National Measurement Institute's (NMI) Power Systems Technology Team develops innovative technologies for power system measurements and testing. It operates Australia’s largest high-voltage/high-current laboratory and provides critical services to electric power utilities and to power equipment manufacturers.
We play an exciting role in supporting Australia’s Net Zero Plan as its services are essential for the generation, storage, delivery and use of clean energy.
The services are divided into three major areas:
- high-voltage testing and calibration
- calibration of power system voltage and current sensors
- manufacture of customised digital and analogue measurement devices of the highest accuracy.
The team presently offers over 30 different types of regular testing and calibration, covering a wide range of devices and measurement parameters. We also collaborate with universities, other national metrology institutes and industry in research projects to develop novel measurement techniques and systems.
Furthermore, we participate in the work of the International Electrotechnical Commission and of Standards Australia, contributing to the development of international and Australian documentary standards in the area of power systems-related fields and taking leadership roles in a range of technical working groups.
- Extensive experience in precision high-voltage and high-current test and calibration and in the operation of high-voltage laboratories.
- A leading national authority in the areas of high-voltage measurements and calibration of instrument transformers.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in developing innovative and complex measurement systems in high-voltage, high-current and instrument transformers.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in developing and maintaining quality systems for providing high-voltage test and calibration services, including developing quality system documents.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in relevant stakeholder engagement, particularly for establishing complex services, organisation of international comparisons and presenting collaborative research outcomes at scientific conferences and journals.
Demonstrated skills and experience in managing resources in the context of providing calibration and testing services, including procurement of major equipment of complex specification, supervision of technical staff and providing staff training.
**What you will do**:
In this role, you will:
- Provide technical leadership in all areas of services, which currently include high voltage testing and calibration, high-current testing and calibration, instrument transformer calibration.
- Work with the project leader in setting strategic directions of services and capability development, ensuring technical relevance.
- Assume responsibilities in development of new capabilities, conducting collaborative research work and publication of research findings.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance development of new capabilities, including development of new measurement systems and construction of high-voltage and electronic devices, conducting collaborative research work and publication of research.
- Work with the group leader in managing test and calibration services, including managing resources, maintaining the quality system, organising and managing quality assurance activities such as international comparisons, providing necessary staff training.
- Mentor and supervise other technical staff and perform complex calibrations, such as during on-site calibrations.
**Eligibility**:
A tertiary degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
**Notes**:
Whilst the department does support flexible working arrangements, due to the nature of the work - this role is laboratory-based at NMI's Sydney Headquarters.
