**The opportunity**:
The Research Officer (RO) is a postdoctoral bioinformatician with expertise in microbial genomics or microbiome science, and who will be based at the Baker Institute in the Systems Genomics Lab and supervised by Dr Guillaume Méric.
The lab has been awarded a NHMRC grant to characterise antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and pathogenic carriage in large human cohort datasets in collaboration with European research partners, and the RO is expected to be one of the focal points for this project.
**Key dutys**:
In this role you will be expected to:
- Leading and contributing to projects with experimental design, data processing, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation.
- Performing high quality research in microbial genomics, bioinformatics and/or computational biology.
- Developing analytical methodologies.
- Contributing to preparing manuscripts for publication, technical reports and other documents.
- Participating in development of general goals for projects.
- Supervising and mentoring junior technical staff, undergrad and placement students.
**Skills and experience**:
You will have:
- A PhD in a quantitative discipline involving a microbial component (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics, epidemiology).
- Experience in a science discipline (e.g. biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics/genomics) with substantial quantitative component.
- Research experience in at least one of the areas above.
- Unix-based systems, computing clusters, modern scripting/programming languages including R.
- Well-developed time management skills with the ability to prioritise demands.
