About The Role
Anglicare has an exciting opportunity for an Aboriginal Wellbeing Counsellor and Peer Practitioner to join our Shoalhaven Mental Health Hub with our Community and Mission Business Unit.
The aim of this role is to provide a range of case management, outreach, and recovery-oriented supports to improve the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. This role involves delivering therapeutic counselling, mentorship for peer workers, and fostering culturally sensitive services in collaboration with local health and support organisations. You will provide mental health assessments, treatment, advocacy, and information services, ensuring cultural safety and understanding while supporting individuals on their recovery journey
This is a Permanent Part Time (4days a week) role based at Nowra.
Responsibilities (not limited to):
- Assist clients in achieving the best possible outcomes by establishing strong connections to formal and informal supports within the local community.
- Collaborate with clients to understand their interests, family, and community connections, helping them build their capacity to actively engage in their community.
- Facilitate access to appropriate community supports and ensure clients' rights to access services are upheld.
- Support the planning and facilitation of mental health programs aimed at enhancing community safety and wellbeing.
- Provide immediate crisis support and assist in developing safety plans, enabling clients to safely return home.
- Maintain a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented approach, fostering hope and resilience in clients.
- Offer culturally appropriate therapeutic counselling to clients, addressing emotional and mental health needs and fostering personal growth.
Requirements:
- Aboriginality
- Current registration with ACA or equivalent (student acceptable)
- A sound knowledge of Aboriginal/ Torres Strait Islander communities and relevant organisations within Shoalhaven.
- Have a demonstrated understanding of social & emotional health and wellbeing issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- NSW Drivers licence
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, as well as independently.
