Training in clinical skills is a major component of the ANU Medical School curriculum and the ANU Medical School uses a range of teaching approaches and technologies to deliver this training. One of these approaches is for medical students to work with simulated patient role-players (SPs). Simulation allows medical students to learn in a safe and controlled environment which replicates aspects of real-life situation. Students learn, develop and practice interviewing and communication skills by role-playing different consultation scenarios with simulated patients.
Clinical Skills teaching takes place at The Medical School’s Canberra Hospital Campus. Under broad supervision and direction of their supervisor, Simulated Patients work in different parts of the clinical skills program: lecture demonstrations, classroom teaching/tutorials/workshops/video consultations and student assessment.
