The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is responsible for the safety of international shipping and domestic commercial vessels and protection of the environment from ship sourced pollution. We provide the infrastructure for safety of navigation in Australian waters and maintain a national search and rescue service for the maritime and aviation sectors.

**ABOUT THE TEAM**

AMSA’s lawyers have amazing opportunities to advise on a wide range of interesting legislative, program and policy issues. This includes the provision of legal advice to support operational and policy areas, commercial agreements, decision making and FOI and privacy matters

The team also undertakes a litigation function managing AMSA's occasional representation in court and tribunal matters, including appeals against regulatory decisions, native title, coronials and cost recovery following pollution events.

AMSA’s role in ensuring the safety of international shipping and protection of the environment also provides opportunities to work on matters with an international focus, including in relation to activities of the International Maritime Organisation.

**ABOUT THE ROLE**

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the Solicitor is responsible for providing legal support to assist in ensuring that AMSA’s functions are conducted in compliance with relevant legislation and policy. The Solicitor proactively identifies and manages legal risk and ensures that AMSA’s staff are able to understand and therefore meet statutory and legal obligations concerning AMSA’s functions and powers.

You will be responsible for:

- Assisting the Deputy General Counsel to provide legal services to AMSA staff covering all areas of AMSA’s legal practice.
- Providing independent written and oral legal advice on a range of complex legislative, operational, corporate and governance matters.
- Implementing processes and procedures for the efficient running of the Office of Legal Counsel and the effective provision of legal services to mitigate risk.
- Supporting AMSA’s privacy and Freedom of Information functions.

**SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE**

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

- A degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas qualification.
- Admission to practice as a barrister/solicitor in an Australian State or Territory and ability to acquire a practising certificate.
- Minimum 3 years post admission experience, preferably in a government setting.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at Baseline level.
- High level written and verbal communication skills with an ability to communicate successfully to people in a range of positions.
- General understanding of the legal environment in which AMSA operates.
- Ability to produce accurate and comprehensive analysis of legal issues in AMSA’s operational context.
- Demonstrated ability to produce quality outcomes.
