ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as that of the developing world. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the Research School of Psychology, the ANU Medical School, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the National Centre for Epidemiology & Population Health (NCEPH). These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.

The JCSMR constitutes a highly interactive and intellectually stimulating research environment within its three research divisions (Immunology, Neuroscience, and Genome and Cancer). It has a strong mentoring culture, which gives junior scientists easy access to advice from more experienced colleagues. Links among researchers in the ANU College of Health and Medicine, and the College of Science and Environment provides access to a broader life science research context at the university.

**Position overview**
While it is known that epigenetic modifications play a crucial role in regulating all aspects of genome function, a major gap in knowledge is how this second dimension of genomic information is functionally translated or interpreted to regulate specific patterns of gene expression. This project will reveal new fundamental principles of gene regulation that include elucidating the precise order of epigenetic and transcription events required for a gene to be either activated or repressed during cancer progression and cellular differentiation. This will involve using state-of-the-art genomic and proteomic approaches to reveal the drivers of cell fate. Applicants will require strong skills in cellular, molecular and biochemical techniques needed to study the expression of genes in cells.
