Canberra, Australia CSIRO Full time

**Acknowledgement of Country**:
CSIRO acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land, sea and waters, of the area that we live and work on across Australia. We acknowledge their continuing connection to their culture and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. View our vision towards reconciliation

**The Opportunity**:
CSIRO is seeking an experienced leader to lead the implementation of the AquaWatch Australia Mission. CSIRO’s purpose as Australia’s national science agency is to solve Australia’s greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. As one of the world’s largest mission-driven multidisciplinary science and research organisations, we are focusing on the issues that matter the most: for our quality of life, for the economy and for our environment.

The AquaWatch Australia Mission concept has been under development since 2020, and aims to address one of Australia’s greatest challenges: monitoring the health of our inland and coastal waters. Together with our partners we aim to co-design and build an extensive network of ground-based sensors integrated with satellite data (and eventually purpose-designed Earth observation satellites) to monitor the quality of Australia’s rivers and coastal and inland waterways with real-time data and predictive analysis.

AquaWatch Australia will support water managers to monitor natural events such as toxic algal blooms, the contamination of drinking water, and excess runoff from irrigation and will increase the resilience of rural and regional communities that depend on water for agriculture and improve environmental outcomes.

**Your duties will include**:

- Be an ambassador for the Mission to external stakeholders, and a visible presence to industry, the research sector and Government stakeholders.
- Lead the planning, strategy and delivery of scientific and collaborative research activities required to implement the Mission.
- Integrate and manage a multi-disciplinary and diverse team using an influential leadership ability and strong governance of interests among the diverse team.
- Attract and work with partners (both national and international) across the innovation system around shared goals that can only be solved through large-scale collaborative activities.
- Build and maintain collaborative networks across industry, Government, the research sector and community.
- Manage the resource planning, financial, governance, partnerships and reporting requirements of the Mission.

**Location**:Canberra preferred. Other locations may be considered.

**Salary**:AU$174,458- AU$219,038 (negotiable) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**Tenure**:Specified term of 3 years

**Reference**:92341

**To be considered you will need**:

- A relevant PhD (or equivalent) ideally with managerial experience or qualifications, or managerial qualifications combined with significant experience and depth of understanding of science from either a research or industry background.
- Proven track record of building and leading a scientific and collaborative research initiative from inception, including co-designing goals and developing and implementing strategy.
- Proven track record of effective internal and external stakeholder engagement and strategic relationship management that grows new research partnerships and opportunities for future outcomes.
- Proven ability to establish productive teams, provide personnel and performance management, and provide strong and cohesive leadership to multidisciplinary, geographically dispersed teams with differing priorities and drivers.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake strategic planning and financial management, operationalise the strategic vision for staff, and gain commitment to the direction chosen.
- Proven ability to work with ambiguity and bring clarity to complex issues.
- Ability to prepare compelling written submissions that document, for example, business cases and/or implementation roadmaps.
- Domain knowledge in water resource management and/or Earth observation.
