**Position Overview**
We are recruiting for a number of upcoming and potential vacancies to support the effective operation of chambers within the Federal Court of Australia.
Judicial Support positions include:
- Associate roles;
- Research Associate roles; and
- Executive and Administrative Support roles.
- Please note: the majority of roles are non-ongoing. Employment may be offered for a total period of up to 18 months. Future opportunities may also be promoted through judges websites and networks._
**Associate**
The Associate provides high-level legal and administrative support to their judge and works closely with other chambers, registry and court staff to achieve desired outcomes. This is a role that requires an articulate, energetic and flexible individual who can build positive professional relationships. The Associate is responsible for contributing to the development of and adherence to nationally consistent practice and procedures within the individual Judge’s Chambers.
**Research Associate**
The position is a key legal support role within the reformed structure of the Court. The Research Associate role focuses on providing legal support to judges, as required due to overall workload volume or in relation to specific matters. This legal support can be in relation to any of the Court’s national practice areas. Research Associates are expected to display a high level of professionalism and initiative, should be adaptable to changing demands and have an ability to maintain confidentiality. Research Associates may at any given time be supporting one or more Judge, and across a variety of the Court’s registries.
**Executive and Administrative Support**
The Executive and Administrative Support role provides administrative, legal and general support to a judge of the Court. This role operates as a part of a small team within chambers to support the judge in managing and progressing cases efficiently and effectively. This role is the main point of contact in chambers and is responsible for the efficient administration of chambers, including correspondence, file and diary management. Executive and Administrative Support Officers also provide legal support to the judge, including assisting the judge with court work, with case management and with the production of orders and reasons.
**Key duties**
Judicial support staff may be required to undertake both administrative and legal support functions within chambers. Depending on the role, duties may include:
- Supporting a judge and their chambers by assisting with significant and complex matters requiring greater than usual assistance, including in-court assistance.
- Assist judges with the coordination and case management of matters, including organising the judge’s court sittings, listings, court materials and liaising with parties, as required.
- Prepare case summaries of matters in the judge’s docket based upon the nature and circumstances of the matter, the relevant legislation, practice and procedure and the rules of the Court.
- Optimising and implementing document management systems in chambers, including ensuring that all court files and other records are accurate and up to date.
- Organising meetings, seminars, appointments and other commitments, including attending to all logistics and arranging official travel. Note, some interstate travel may be required.
**Qualifications**
**Selection Criteria**
- The ability to carry out legal research, managing workloads appropriately to ensure that requests for legal research are responded to in an accurate and timely manner.
- Strong written and oral communication skills including legal drafting skills and the ability to prepare speeches, briefing papers and correspondence.
- Sound organisational skills including the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure in a team environment.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills including tact, discretion, initiative and the ability to communicate effectively with members of the judiciary, the legal profession, the public and other court staff.
- Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including the use of electronic legal resources and the ability to learn and use the Court’s case management systems and court room technology.
**Eligibility**
- Australian citizenship -successful applicants must hold Australian citizenship.
- Security and character clearance - successful applicants must satisfy a Police Records Check and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment.
