About the Role
Guidance Officer - Wellbeing are employed under the department's generic Guidance officer role description with a distinct focus on the below key priorities:
Priority 1: Identification, support and therapeutic intervention planning for students with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. The Guidance officers - wellbeing will deliver therapeutic support to students in response to their mild to moderate mental health difficulties. This may include liaising with and referring to external agencies to provide a wrap-around support system for the student.
Priority 2: Provide advice and counselling on educational, behavioural, vocational, personal, social, family and mental health and wellbeing issues. This will be done through ongoing counselling support of students referred for mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Counselling may be provided individually or in a group format.
Priority 3: Provide support and ensure safety plans for the school context are implemented for students who are self-harming and/or at risk of suicide. The Guidance officers - wellbeing will ensure they have participated in suicide prevention and postvention training provided by the department and use the knowledge and skills gained through this training to respond appropriately to student suicide risk and events. This includes developing and supporting the implementation of student risk assessments, support plans and safety plans.

Within the context of the role described above, the ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:
Capacity to provide leadership that enables the effective delivery of whole-of-school educational programs and services that support the inclusion of all students.
Capacity for effective counselling and individual case management involving a multidisciplinary approach, within an environment of competing priorities.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to develop and sustain productive relationships within and beyond the school community.
Capacity to develop and implement student support programs and services for students with high support needs that reflect best practice and that align with departmental policies and procedures.
Demonstrated capacity to effectively respond to sensitive and complex student issues within an ethical framework.
