**About the Opportunity**
We are seeking a motivated Part-time Laboratory Technician with experience in microbiology diagnostics to provide quality service in testing a wide range of pathogens on samples from across Australia, New Zealand, and other regions of Australasia. You will be working as part of a dedicated team that includes veterinarians, scientists, and technicians.
**Key Responsibilities - Laboratory Technician**
- Support Section/Laboratory Managers and Scientists in Microbiology and other areas.
- Perform bacteriological testing, microbial identification, and antimicrobial sensitivity testing.
- Identify endo/ectoparasites in wet mounts, motility preparations, fur/anal tape tests, and fecal float preparations.
- Maintain client isolates and Quality Control organisms.
- Assist with specimen reception, checking submissions, logging in records, and resolving discrepancies.
- Enter and manage submissions in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Prepare, label, and distribute samples for testing.
- Assist in result analysis, data entry, and sample archiving.
- Maintain equipment, cleanliness, and general lab upkeep.
- Support Section Supervisors in coordinating testing and managing caseloads.
- Manage reagent/consumable stocks and assist in reagent preparation.
- Handle waste disposal and autoclaving of consumables.
- Contribute to research, service improvements, and Quality Management System updates.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment by following safety and laboratory best practices.
**Ideal Qualifications, Skills & Experience**
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a clinical or veterinary microbiology laboratory, including proficiency in specimen processing, microscopy, performing analyses, and interpreting cultures and organism identification using a variety of techniques, biochemical tests, and the API system.
- Practical experience in a diagnostic pathology or veterinary microbiology laboratory is advantageous.
- Strong work ethic, with a positive “can-do” attitude and a commitment to exceeding customer service expectations by maintaining service excellence.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Exceptional attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
- Adaptability to change and the ability to collaborate with a dynamic team.
- Ability to follow established procedures and instructions precisely.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize workloads.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
- A current Australian driver’s license is preferred.
