**Our Purpose**
We are the only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural institution solely
dedicated to telling the story of Australia’s First Nations peoples.
We collect, steward and appropriately share Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’
knowledge through our collection, our leadership in research and our network of collaborations
and partnerships by:
- Creating opportunities for everyone to encounter, engage with and be transformed by
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights, knowledge, cultures and stories.
- Enhancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural vitality; and
- Shaping our national narrative.
Our functions are established under the _Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait _
- Islander Studies Act 1989_.
AIATSIS is a statutory authority under the Public Service Act 1999 (Cth) and a Corporate
Commonwealth entity under the PGPA Act.
AIATSIS employees are employed under the Public Service Act 1999, with terms and conditions
of employment as set out in the AIATSIS Enterprise Agreement.

**About the Group**
The Collections Services Group is responsible for the development, management, and
preservation of the AIATSIS Collection. The Group manages, describes, preserves, and digitises
the AIATSIS Collection.
**About the Program Area**
The Collection Management Program sits within the Collection Services Group. Collection
Management consists of the Audiovisual and Photographic Unit and the Print and Published
Unit. Key operational activities of the program include cataloguing, accessioning, and describing
the AIATSIS Audiovisual, Photographic, Manuscript and Published collections to enhance
discoverability of, and access to, these collections for all Australians. Collection Management
works closely with Collection Development and Care, Collection Preservation and Digitisation,
and Collection Access teams to support the discoverability and accessibility of the AIATSIS
collection for all Australians.
**Role Summary**
The Team Leader plays a key role in the development, management and documentation of
AIATSIS collection materials. This work involves but is not limited to
- assessment, accessioning, cataloguing and describing AIATSIS collection materials.
- development and review of collection management standards and procedures for
- collection materials and the wider AIATSIS collection.
- quality assurance.

- communicating and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
- descriptive work, including creating finding aids, auditioning, and captioning depending
- on the format of material.
- support the Assistant Director and contribute to development and implementation of
wider program and agency business plan, policies and procedures.
The work involves the care and management of items with cultural sensitivities. The position
reports to the Assistant Director, Print and Published.
**Key Responsibilities**
Key responsibilities of the role include:
- collaborate with the Assistant Director in managing the workflow including prioritising,
allocating and undertaking the collection development and management activities, as
well as monitoring and reporting on the unit’s key performance indicators.
