Omico, the Australian Genomic Cancer Medicine Centre encompasses several cohort studies to improve the understanding, early detection, prevention and management of cancer. This includes the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) Program and the Genetic Cancer Risk in the Young Study which are recruiting patients at multiple sites in Australia.

The Opportunity

In addition to undertaking the research, the successful applicant will be responsible for routinely and methodically recording lab work, pipeline troubleshooting, and general maintenance of the lab workspace - including ordering necessary consumables and directly liaising with sales representatives.

Key Responsibilities
- Extracting DNA and RNA from patient samples including formalin-fixed tissues and blood samples
- Cataloguing and archiving DNA, RNA samples
- Primer design, traditional and quantitative PCR
- Gel electrophoresis
- Analysis/interpretation of Sanger sequencing data
- Library preparation and NextSeq sequencing
- Coordination and execution of daily laboratory experiments with other laboratory personnel
- Establishing and maintaining excellent records for all project work
- Assisting in daily operation of the laboratory, including the maintenance of lab supplies, cleaning of equipment and general lab hygiene

About You

The key skills and experience include:

- The Research Assistant will be responsible for and should be comfortable with making collaborative decisions which have an impact on experimental procedures and the smooth running of the lab.
- BSc (Hons) or MSc in a relevant area of science with a minimum of 2 years working full time as a research assistant
- Practical experience in basic molecular techniques including DNA and RNA extraction and PCR
- High attention to detail and ability to carry out high-quality work
- Highly organised and excellent communicator
- Competency in Microsoft Office, with an ability to prepare detailed, consistent and thorough experiment documentation
- Perseverance and ability to troubleshoot problems
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
- Ability to assess priorities and meet necessary deadlines
- Schedule flexibility

Desirable
- Previous experience in a similar role
- Experience handling human samples
- Knowledge and/or experience with database systems and records management
