The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP, formally known as AAHL) helps protect Australia’s multi-billion dollar livestock and aquaculture industries, and the general public, from emerging infectious disease threats. **The opportunity**
The Diagnosis, Surveillance and Response (DSR) Program at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), provides diagnostic and research capability required to investigate and respond to newly emerging diseases affecting livestock and other animals. The Histology team delivers science to both the DSR and research groups within the ACDP and the wider scientific community.
As a Histologist with the DSR Program, you will play a central role in delivering diagnostic histology services at the ACDP. Performing all basic and complex histological techniques, you will identify host markers of infection. You will also have a vital role in assisting the DSR program with continuing support for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) surveillance throughout Australia
The appointee must be able to meet ACDP’s microbiological security and security assessment requirements.
**Your high-level duties will include**:
- Contribute to all aspects of a Histology laboratory. Specific duties include but are not limited to:
- Specimen Accessioning into LIMS system
- Specimen cut up
- Specimen processing - (ASP300)
- Embedding
- Microtomy
- Basic Histological stainsH&E
- Immunohistochemistry. (DAKO Autostainer), including the characterisation of new anti-bodies using advanced technical skills
- Slide send out and block checking
- Scanning of slides
- Contribute to QA requirements, maintaining up-to-date and accurate test records as well as annual updates of Standard Operating Procedures and proficiency testing.
- Maintain laboratory consumables.
- Respond efficiently to client requests.

**Salary**: AU$73k - AU$93k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**_Essential_**
- Relevant tertiary qualification in science preferably Applied Science, or relevant industry experience.
- Proven knowledge and experience in all aspects of Laboratory, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, microscopy and basic Histology staining.
- Demonstrated experience in immunohistochemistry skills.
- Understanding the importance of Quality Assurance and Quality control.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and co-operatively as a member of a larger team to work effectively towards deadlines.
**_ Desirable_**
- Advanced immunohistochemistry skills including the characterization of new antibodies
- Experience with ISH (in situ hybridisation)
- Understanding of Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)
- Previous experience in a NATA accredited histology laboratory
