**About the job**:

- As the Advanced Trainee in Public Health Medicine you will achieve all the competencies leading to a Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM).
- You will have a particular focus on rural, Aboriginal and One Health issues in Public Health Medicine.
- You will work in a highly competent multi-disciplinary team to contribute to protecting the health of the population of Hunter New England.
- You will be supported by three accredited highly experienced public health physicians in the Population Health Unit who will mentor and support you within this position. They have an excellent track record in developing highly effective public health physicians.

**Where you’ll be working**:

- Hunter New England Population Health is responsible for the delivery of Population Health services to the people of the Hunter and New England regions.
- Our vision - Hunter New England Population Health delivers services that support the development and maintenance of healthy environments, healthy communities and healthy people. Our mission is to protect and promote the health and well-being of people in the Hunter, New England and wider communities.
- Our services - Our services include responding to environmental, emergency and communicable disease threats, and promoting policies, services, environments and behaviours that are conducive to good health. Such services incorporate the principles and strategies of epidemiology, surveillance, health protection, health promotion, behaviour, and practice change and research.
- Our community - The people we serve number more than 840,000 and live in an area of about 132,845 square kilometres. Cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases and injury continue to form the major burden of disease in our community. Vaccine-preventable infectious diseases continue to be major contributors to this disease burden. Communicable disease and environmental health risks remain a challenge. Health inequalities impact negatively on the health of the population.

**Requirements**:

- Enrolled as an Advanced Trainee in the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine Advanced Training Program OR an Overseas Trained Physician (ie. a Specialist International Medical Graduate) who is undertaking Specialist Assessment with the AFPHM and requires a position to complete.
- MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Eligibility to drive in NSW.
- Have completed at least 3 years of medical experience since graduating and completed, or enrolled in an MPH (or equivalent) including the faculty's core discipline areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Protection, Health Promotion, Health Policy, Planning and Management.
- Demonstrated interest in a range of elements core to public health practice, particularly the Rural, One Health and Aboriginal priorities of Hunter New England.
- Advanced independent clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly.
