**About the Role**

The clinical component of the Transition Year position will mirror that of a junior consultant with responsibilities including directing patient management, supervising and managing the multidisciplinary clinical team, collaborating with other multi-specialty clinicians and providing first on call cover whilst being supervised with an immediately available intensivist.

Our ICU offers a wide breath of opportunities to develop and expand interest in the areas of Leadership, Communication, Education, ECMO, Paediatrics, Safety and Quality and Research through embedded unit programs.

Barwon Health is a Tier 2 ECMO site with the Victorian ECMO Service. Opportunities in the area of ECMO include participation in ECMO initiation decisions, cannulation, patient management decisions, assisting with medical and nursing education programs, participating in VECMOS tiered clinical meetings, local ECMO special interest group and ECMO Management Committee.

UHG ICU has AP6 accreditation with more than 100 Paediatric cases per year. We have close clinical and trainee relationships with our state C24 PICU. We have a strong track record in the areas of Positive Culture, Patient Centred Care and Collaborative Communication. There are opportunities for interested TY Fellows to undergo faculty training in this area through the iValidate program (Identifying Values, Listening and Advising High Risk patients in Acute Care) which focuses on difficult communication scenarios, end of life care and ethics.

1. Leadership - this stream would focus on developing clinical and management leadership skills. This includes involvement at departmental meetings and through ICU representation at hospital committee level. Opportunities exist internally with our safety and quality program, involvement in change management proposals, relevant special interest groups with protocol and guideline reviews and preparing audits. Additionally, fellows would be supported to undertake external training and gain qualifications within the leadership and/or communication domains.

2. Education - this stream would focus on developing education skills. Internally this will be through activities such as leading and coordinating the education program for junior medical staff (including journal club and echocardiography teaching), assisting with trainee CICM examination preparation, facilitating local delivery of BASIC, and contributing the ECMO and paediatric training. Simulation based training is available in conjunction with the Deakin University ReVISE medical simulation unit for medical student and multispecialty registrar education. Delivery and development of content for local ECMO programs in collaboration with the UHG ECMO coordinator would also be offered. Additionally, fellows will be supported to undertake external training and gain qualifications within the education domain.
