**Purpose of position**
The Research Associate is part of a team assisting in the day-to-day management of a Judge’s Chambers. The role also includes a wide range of research and administrative support relating to the Judge’s role. This Research Associate position predominantly involves legal research, drafting and editorial work. Some limited courtroom work may be involved. The Judges who will be assisted by this Research Associate exercises the Court's family law and general federal law jurisdiction (including the jurisdictions intellectual property, administrative law, fair work, human rights, bankruptcy and the judicial review of migration decisions).

**Important Functions**
The person appointed to this position is expected to carry out their duties so as to:

- satisfy all relevant statutory obligations
- satisfy the Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct
- contribute to and support achievement of the Court’s Strategic and Business Plans
- operate within the Court’s policies and procedural guide lines, and
- support and contribute to the Court’s Service Charter

**Key Responsibilities and Duties**
- Conduct high level legal research in relation to specific matters in the Judge’s docket;
- Assisting the judge with the drafting of written reasons for judgment;
- Preparing case summaries of matters in a judge’s docket based upon the nature and circumstances of the matter, the relevant legislation, practice and procedure and the Rules of Court;
- Ensure the Court’s case management system is up-to-date and assist the Judge in the preparation of orders and judgments;
- The ability to work both as part of a team and individually.
- Other duties as required.

**Competencies & Attributes**
- Legal research, analysis and drafting skills;
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy;
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills, appropriate presentation for court work and the ability to appropriately deal with sensitive and confidential information. The ability to interact professionally with litigants, practitioners, chambers and judges;
- An understanding of the jurisdiction and practice and procedure of the FCFCOA (Division 2) or the ability to acquire such knowledge quickly;
- The ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively, as required;
- The ability to evaluate a large volume of information quickly and to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.

**Selection Criteria**
- Demonstrated legal research, analysis and drafting skills underpinned by good attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to prepare complex legal briefing materials, well-drafted correspondence and case summaries.
- Problem solving skills and the ability to evaluate a large volume of information quickly and to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Initiative to work autonomously and take responsibility for progressing work while also being able to work collaboratively, build and maintain positive professional relationships and deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information.
- Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including the use of electronic legal resources and the ability to learn and use the Court’s case management systems.
- The ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
- A high standard of ethical behaviour.

**Other Requirements**
- A law degree is required.
