A unique opportunity exists for talented and passionate individuals to join the Treaty Negotiations and Strategy Branch as Principal Legal Adviser to support the delivery of strategic advice on Treaty related matters and supporting whole-of-government Treaty reform.
The First Peoples - State Relations Group is responsible for ground-breaking work in the areas of cultural rights, self-determination, treaty, and truth. Treaty in Victoria will deliver unprecedented outcomes for First Peoples as the first Treaty process substantially underway in Australia.
The responsibilities of the Treaty Negotiations and Strategy Branch include leading Treaty negotiations with First Peoples' Representative groups on behalf of the State and embedding a whole-of-government, coordinated and focussed approach for a Statewide Treaty and Traditional Owner Treaties with Aboriginal Victorians.
As the Principal Legal Adviser, you will coordinate and lead a team of legal advisers to deliver high quality, strategic, clear and considered legal advice for the Treaty Negotiations and Strategy branch and departmental senior executives, Ministers and the Premier. Work outputs include research, correspondence, briefings, Cabinet Submissions and reports on sensitive issues within tight timeframes.
About you

**To succeed in this role, you will possess**:

- Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills
- Strong legal, analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to lead a team to initiate, deliver and manage strategic projects on time and to a high standard
- Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities with the ability to meet deadlines while working in pressured situations
- Demonstrably strong policy and analytical skills
- An understanding of government processes
- An understanding of systemic State intersections with marginalised or vulnerable groups,
- A passion for treaty and justice for Victoria's First Peoples
- Admitted to the Australian legal profession and hold a current Australian practising certificate issued in either Victoria or New South Wales
