The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is seeking to employ two Lecturers in Chemistry, with a focus on Energetic Materials (EM) to undertake teaching and research activities in the School of Science, UNSW Canberra. The Lecturers will primarily contribute to an Explosives Ordnance (EO) Master’s program developed in response to a requirement from the Australian Defence Force to educate personnel to Master’s level. This is a joint initiative of the School of Science and the School of Engineering and Information Technology at the UNSW, Canberra.

We are seeking to appoint two lectureship positions in Chemistry: (1) the first position is for an individual who will be able to develop and deliver courses that provide education on the scientific understanding of the chemistry of EM (explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics), including physical chemistry, synthesis and material properties; regulations and legal context for explosive safety, including Insensitive munitions (IM) policy and IM formulations and testing methods; and environmental effects of EM/EO, including disposal, demilitarisation and recycling; and the second position (2) is for an individual who will be able to develop and deliver courses that provide education on the forensic chemistry of EM (explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics, both conventional and homemade). The individual must have expertise in the scientific principles and applied use of EM detection technologies, sampling techniques and methods for the forensic analysis of EM in military and law enforcement settings.

As a member of the Chemistry Research Group and the new Explosive Ordnance Masters team, you will have the exciting opportunity to shape this new area of research and teaching in the School of Science UNSW Canberra, and to contribute to team initiatives promoting productive working relationships within the Faculty and University and wider stakeholders.
- A PhD or equivalent qualification in Chemistry or a related discipline area that is relevant to contributing to the Master’s program, as described in the Position Summary.
- Relevant technical qualifications and/or prior knowledge and experience gained through working with EM or EO, within Defence, academia or external industry.
- A contemporary knowledge and understanding of domestic and international regulatory frameworks with respect to EM and EO safety management practices will be highly regarded.
- An emerging record of excellence in research and publication.
- The ability to support and teach both introductory and specialist courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
