The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) examines the natural environment, including life, from the core of the Earth to its upper atmosphere, deep in time through to the present and modelling towards the future. Research within BEES is clustered within four general thematic areas: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Climate Science; Environmental Change, Sustainability and Resources; Paleoenvironments and Earth History. The School of BEES has over 150 academic and professional staff, over 170 research students and 60 honours students.
The Research Assistant (Level 5) provides technical and research assistance to a research team assessing recovery in threatened Australian amphibians and reptiles. The position will be responsible for drafting conservation assessments for species, identifying experts for input, mapping and assisting with the delivery of workshops.
**About the role**
- **Level 5 - ($85k - $96k) -**plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term - 2 years
- Part-time (14 hours per week)
The role reports to the Professor Richard Kingsford and has no direct reports.
**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:
- Collate and enter data on Australian reptile and amphibian species
- Draft IUCN Red List conservation assessments and IUCN Green Status assessments for Australian reptile and amphibian species
- Identify experts on species for input, potentially seek expert elicitations, collate publication and citation data
- Map species distributions
- Assist with the organisation and delivery of workshops
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.
**About the successful applicant**:
**(Selection Criteria)**
- A university degree in Biology or related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated experience and accuracy in maintaining a large database.
- Knowledge of Australia’s reptiles and/or amphibians and experience with spatial analyses and formal conservation assessments - Desirable.Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise your own workload and work independently as well as an effective member of a multi-institutional team
- Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills, with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent computer literacy including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and mapping software (ie. ArcGIS, QGIS).
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
