The Supreme Court of Victoria (the Court) is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts. Judges in the Court are supported by associates who assist in the management and coordination of the Judge's judicial, court management, administrative and legal research responsibilities.
The successful applicants will have strong academic credentials and, preferably, at least 2 years' post-admission experience. The President sits on criminal and civil appeals, and has responsibility for ensuring the efficient conduct of the work of the Court of Appeal. The President's associates assists in the discharge of her Honour's judicial and administrative responsibilities.
A significant portion of the work involves high-level legal research and writing. The President's associates also perform administrative tasks in connection with case management.
Excellent research, writing and proficiency in grammar and a strong academic record are essential.
The duties of an associate to the President are detailed in the attached position description but specifically include:
- demonstrated ability in statutory interpretation;
- preparing research memoranda and assisting in the production of judgments, including proofreading and editing;
- leadership and training for other Court of Appeal associates;
- initiate, develop and implement improvements to Court policies and processes;
- clerking in court;
- performing administrative tasks, including maintaining Court records and preparing material for use by the Judge in Court;
- liaising with Court staff, the public, government and the profession;
- accompanying the Judge to circuit courts in regional Victoria, as and when required; and
- assisting the President to prepare for, and accompany the President to external events including drafting speeches, panel discussions and meetings.
