**What you'll be doing**

The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network is committed to promoting the health and well-being of children who may be at risk of harm due to neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and domestic violence through excellence and leadership in assessment, treatment, prevention, education, advocacy and research.

SCHN has a total of two Child Protection Unit’s (CPU), one located at each hospital site - The Children’s Hospitals at Westmead and The Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick. The multidisciplinary CPU teams include specialist medical and psycho-social health professionals. Their role is to provide forensic, medical and counselling health services to children, young people and their families following allegations of child abuse and neglect, including sexual assault. They also support children and carers in out of home care, those preparing for court and general advocacy and case management.

The Aboriginal Sexual Assault Worker will work from a strengths based, family centered, culturally appropriate and trauma informed approach. This role will provide therapeutic and casework services to children and young people who have been sexually assaulted, and their non-offending family members. Working within a highly supportive multidisciplinary team, this role will provide quality services to patients/clients of NSW Health to meet their health and wellbeing needs.

It is intended that the Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor will partner with other local sexual assault services and community run initiatives to develop a deeper understanding of awareness and understanding of how to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people who may engage with these specific services. Working towards cultural competence is a responsibility of all CPU/SAS staff*.

The Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor position will be a valued member of the CPU teams across both Randwick and Westmead. There is 0.5FTE available at both sites.

The role includes both cultural and clinical supervision with opportunities for further education and training. Professional development plans will be in place to allow for workplace progression.

NSW Health provides integrated violence, abuse and neglect services to clients, specifically for those who may have experience the trauma of sexual assault and domestic violence. NSW Health seeks to provide a culturally safe sexual assault service (SAS) for people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal families and communities.
- Responding to Sexual Assault (Adult and Child) Policy and Procedures February 2020
- Tertiary qualification (bachelor degree) in Social Work, Psychology or Counselling that meets the eligibility for State Award or as deemed appropriate by employer OR completion of the ECAV pathway Graduate Certificate in Human & Community Services (Interpersonal Trauma) and demonstrated cultural/community experience
- Demonstrated interest in the impact of sexual assault and complex trauma on individuals, families and the Aboriginal community, and ability to provide culturally responsive sexual assault counselling
