SAHMRI Is located on the lands of Kaurna people who are the traditional custodians of Adelaide and the greater Adelaide region. SAHMRI works with traditional custodians across South Australia, Australia and globally. This role is required to collaborate with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on the lands of all traditional custodians across South Australia and potentially globally.

The Qualitative Researcher will have a leadership role supporting qualitative data generation and analysis in wave 3 of the Aboriginal Families Study. This position will have a central role in (i) the conduct of yarning circles and interviews with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families contributing to the co-design of a new measure of Aboriginal young people’s social and emotional wellbeing; and (ii) yarning circles and interviews involving participants in wave 3 of the Aboriginal Families Study: and (iii) analysis and preparation of publication outputs.

This position will be based at SAHMRI Women and Kids (Adelaide) and will work within the Aboriginal Communities and Families Health Research Alliance team.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

- Working with other members of the research team to facilitate community yarning circles and interviews with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people (aged 14-17) and mothers/other primary caregivers of young people.
- Contributing to the establishment of study procedures for qualitative data generation, including development and implementation of training modules and workshops for researchers conducting interviews and yarning circles.
- Liaising with local community organisations, schools, Aboriginal health services and other local community organisations to facilitate conduct of interviews and yarning circles.
- Implementing culturally and ethically sound practices, regarding participant engagement, including procedures for obtaining informed consent.
- Adherence to project data management, data security and data integrity procedures.
- Adherence to risk assessment and risk management procedures to facilitate occupational health and safety during fieldwork.
- Maintaining accurate confidential records of all project-related activities.
- Undertaking analyses of qualitative data.
- Contributing to co-authored publication outputs, including peer reviewed papers and research reports.
- Working with guidance of the Aboriginal Families Study Aboriginal Governance Group.
- Participate in Aboriginal and team cultural activities.
- Taking reasonable care to protect own health, safety and welfare at work and avoid affecting the health and safety of any other person at work.
- Participate in the implementation of the Institute’s Work, Health and Safety Management System and related laws, regulations, and guidelines.
- Ensure that duties are performed in keeping with the principles outlined in SAHMRI’s Vision, Mission and Values and the Code of Conduct Policy.

About You
- A relevant postgraduate qualification and/or relevant qualitative research training and experience.
- Experience working with Aboriginal young people and families or other communities experiencing health inequities.
- Demonstrated experience in undertaking qualitative research and adhering to research protocols.
- Demonstrated experience generating and analysing qualitative data.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Strong interpersonal and listening skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and key stakeholders in research to achieve agreed goals and objectives.
- Excellent organisational skills, with ability to manage time and priorities effectively and use initiative.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Experience using qualitative analysis software (eg Nvivo).
- A ‘can do’ attitude, friendly and motivated team member.
- Support SAHMRI’s commitment to reconciliation and acknowledge the importance of working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

Special Requirements
- Some out of hours’ work may be required.
- DCSI Working with Children and Police Checks may be required.
- Primarily located at SAHMRI Women and Kids (North Terrace), but travel to other SAHMRI sites may be required.
- SAHMRI is required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy for SAHMRI employees carrying out work in any SA Health Facility.
- Immunisation Risk for this position is - Category A (direct contact with blood or body substances)
