Teacher School Counsellor Refugee Student Support

**Position Information**:
The Department of Education serves the NSW community by providing world-class education from early childhood through to adulthood.
This School Counsellor position will be appointed to Canterbury Vale School and work as part of the state-wide Refugee Student Counselling Support Team (RSCST). The RSCST builds the capacity of Departmental staff in the provision of direct, secondary, and tertiary refugee support across NSW public schools. The team provides consultation in counselling and complex case support, designs/delivers professional learning, and projects, and delivers tailored group interventions to support the safety, well-being and belonging of students of refugee background.
You will be required to hold a current driver’s license and have the ability and willingness to travel between worksites. Travel within NSW may be required.
**Selection Criteria**:
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Teaching qualifications and eligibility for an approval to teach in NSW Department of Education schools
- Successful experience as a school counsellor/school psychologist in NSW Department of Education Schools and registration or provisional registration as a psychologist, or eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
- Demonstrated understanding of the mental health needs of children and young people, including a sound knowledge of issues faced by students with refugee experiences and families seeking asylum
- Experience in cognitive, emotional, and behavioural assessment of children and young people and the ability to build the capacity of school counselling staff to provide appropriate psychological assessment and support for students with refugee experiences.
- Ability to deliver and support others in the delivery of evidence-based psychological and therapeutic interventions (including group interventions) using culturally and trauma responsive lenses, to improve the learning and wellbeing students from refugee backgrounds
- Well-developed interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including report writing
- Ability to work collaboratively with schools, parents, and agencies that support students and families from a refugee background
- Ability to work as a member of a work collaboratively with schools, internal stakeholders, and external agencies to build the capacity of school staff in meeting the wellbeing needs of students and families with refugee experiences
- Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
