Looking for a nanny for little boy w autism
- 20 hrs per week - located in Richmond.
We are looking for a nanny for ongoing work for our five year old son. Our current wonderful nanny is pregnant and will be going on maternity leave from May/June (possibly earlier) and she has a beautiful relationship with our son and has seen him grow up.
Our son: he’s turning 5 at the end of January. He’s autistic (L3) and is non speaking although he does now talk a little bit. He has a mild intellectual disability. He also has big challenges around food (he’s diagnosed with ARFID) and won’t eat when he isn’t feeling regulated.
He attends a specialist autism childcare as well as a few therapies. He loves big movement - bouncing, jumping, crashing into things and loves visiting we rock the spectrum and bounce when they’re quiet and his local park/playground and library and he’s recently been enjoying splashing in the Tusmore pool again and playing at the beach. He adores board books and really likes playing matching games and reading eggs on his iPad. He’s truly an absolute joy and has a great sense of humour and once he trusts someone he’s very cuddly and affectionate. He is not yet toilet trained and it’s a goal for us this year. He has very little awareness of self care activities and general safety so we need someone very switched on.
About us: We live in Richmond and we both work full time. My husband can work from home occasionally if needed but his office is in the city so not far away and I work for myself and will be traveling a bit in 2025 for work. I usually do the majority of childcare and therapy drop offs and visits and work where I can in between these. We are both creative, we love food, art and we essentially structure our work and life commitments around the needs of our son so we are very keen to add to our support network. We also have a ten year old groodle.
What we are looking for in a nanny:
- Experience with working with children with autism/disability.
- Kind, reliable, supportive and responsive.
- Excellent verbal communication.
- Needs to be switched on and thinking ahead. A really high level of emotional intelligence.
- Self aware, patient and eager to learn about our son and want to help him/see him succeed.
- Must have a WWCC, police clearance, current first aid and CPR.
- Able to bounce around and play with our son rather than simply supervise.
- Must have license, own vehicle and be a safe driver. We will supply a car seat.
- Need to have an ABN.
- Need to be ok with dogs as we have one.
The role:
- Approximate 20 hours per week - we have some flexibility as to days/times.
- Likely to be a mix of weekday afternoons, full days (10 to 5) and some hours on a Saturday.
- There may be some evenings occasionally if you have the availability and want the extra hours.
- General household jobs like washing, washing bottles, emptying/stacking dishwasher, putting clothes away, preparing food for our incredibly fussy son.
- A big part of this role is helping our son to eat so if you have experience around this we would love to hear from you. He has an egg allergy.
- Occasionally attending therapy appointments but mostly playing and hanging out with our beautiful little guy.
Our process:
- we envisage that we will start some sessions (paid) with you learning from our current nanny/support worker and us. So hours might start out at 5 to 12 per week at the beginning and then increase.
$45 + per hour - Negotiable
We will also pay for any training, trial shifts and petrol when/if you use your vehicle to take our son out.
We are looking for someone long term (for at least a year) so please only reach out if you’re looking for a long term role as we try to minimize too much change for our son.
