What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Leadership Positions - Recognition, Ceremonial and Customs Team.

The Recognition, Ceremonial and Customs section within the AFP are custodians for the AFP’s customs and protocol, recognition frameworks as well as its history. The team is led by a Band 9 Executive Level employee, with the support of a Band 8 Inspector/Assistant Director.

The Band 9 Superintendent/Executive is responsible for leading and effectively managing the resources, outcomes and performance of several teams: Honours and Awards (the AFP’s recognition framework and formal awards outside the AFP such as the Australian Police Medal), Ceremonial and Protocol, the AFP Museum, AFP Reserves and Former Members, and the Museum of Australian Policing Project.

The Band 8 Inspector/Assistant Director reports to the Band 9 Executive, and is responsible for leading the Honours and Awards, and Ceremonial and Protocol teams. This includes managing the annual National Police Remembrance Day service, leading and training Ceremonial and Protocol Officers across the country, and drill instructing (new police recruits).

The positions engage with a range of stakeholders, including the AFP Commissioner and Senior Executive, former members and their families, Government House, Prime Minister and Cabinet, State and Territory police as well as (more recently) the Australian Federation Guard.

The section plays a critical role in celebrating the AFP, and recognising the achievements of current and former members.

You will work under the strategic direction of the senior executive and are responsible for the leadership and management of a number of teams to deliver outcomes. They require in depth knowledge and understanding of the AFP business and the impact of roles and functions undertaken in relation to the organisation’s reputation to effectively manage operations.

Executive Level employees must also ensure the achievement of outcomes are in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments.

What will you do?

the coordination of formal recognition processes for the AFP
facilitation of the AFP Internal Awards Framework, awards granted under the Australian Honours System, and awards conferred through other bodies
the coordination and execution of various events including funerals, attestations, national remembrance services, and associated requirements
training and coordinating Ceremonial and Protocol Officers based across the country, as well as training (drill instruction) AFP police and Protective Service Officer recruits.

The Band 9 Superintendent/Executive has further leadership and oversight of the AFP Museum Collection and Museum of Australian Policing Project; the first police reserve in Australia (the AFP Reserve) including the development of governance, strategies to increase and maintain membership, and associated deployment procedures; as well as the Former Members programs - its administration of initiatives to engage and support former members of the AFP.

Essential Requirements

A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
