Rural and Remoter Teacher Experience Program

Brisbane, Australia Teach Queensland Full time

About the program
The Rural and Remote Teacher Experience program gives urban Queensland state primary and secondary teachers the opportunity to experience the range of professional, personal and lifestyle benefits that exist in rural and remote Queensland communities. The 1-week experience is organised and funded by the department through an expression of interest process.
The program includes a local 1-day orientation with the host school, a weekend living in the community and 5 days replacing a host teacher in a class similar to their own. Participants will be involved in planning, preparing and delivering effective learning and teaching programs for students in their host class. This is not a mentoring or shadowing experience. The teacher participating in the program will take full class responsibility to enable the host teacher non-contact time to undertake professional learning opportunities.
The experience is open to existing Queensland state school teachers from Metropolitan, North Coast and South East regions. Applicants are able to nominate their preferred placement regions of either Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Central Queensland or Darling Downs South West. While preferences are welcomed, placements will be made based on regional availability and a school matching process. Not sure which location is for you? Find out more information about our rural and remote state schools.
Travel arrangements are funded by the department and allowances are available to cover the cost of meals and incidental expenses. Teacher Relief Scheme (TRS) funding will also be provided to the participant's base school to seek a replacement for the duration of the program.
The program is delivered on dates that are mutually agreed upon by participants, their base school, the host school and region, and the department.
Program benefits
The experience will showcase the benefits of teaching and living in a rural or remote location, highlight opportunities for upcoming vacancies and career progression, and allow participants to develop ongoing professional relationships with their host school. Experiencing rural or remote teaching can provide an invaluable opportunity to broaden teaching practices along with providing enhanced employment opportunities for teachers.
