**VU Research**:
VU Research was established in 2017 and has the mandate to oversee a university-wide approach for enhancing the quality and impact of research and research training at VU. The _VU Research _objective is to achieve high quality, innovative applied and trans locational research that results in healthier, smarter and sustainable communities in the west of Melbourne and beyond, connecting deeply with industry and the community and, in turn, enhancing the quality of teaching and learning and its scholarship.

The two Flagship Research areas that sit within VU Research bridge traditional academic research activities with industry, community or government groups and are expected to: build on existing University activities and develop relationships that will achieve significant added value and impact for the University; deliver significant profile and recognition for the University; develop and maintain a position of leadership in the field both nationally and internationally; build a critical mass of staff and postgraduate students; and achieve a degree of self-support through research grants and contracts.

The operations of the Research Institute and this position are expected to be located predominantly at the Footscray Park Campus of the University, though this position may be relocated to any other existing or future campus.

**About the Role**:
The position is a full-time Research Assistant (RA1) at level B step 2 with PhD in computer science and a good track record in artificial intelligence, optimization theory, and algorithm development.

The successful appointee will work closely with the Professors within the Institute for Sustainable Industries & Liveable Cities and the College of Engineering and Science.

The RA will be involved in designing and implementing the intelligent charging scheduling model and the differential evolution framework (Tasks 1 and 2) in Year 1, design and implementation of the differential evolution algorithms and cooperative co-evolutionary strategies (Tasks 3 and 4) in Year 2. The RA will also implement the system and evaluate it in real data in Victoria State (Task 5) in Year 3.

**Major Challenges**:
This position reports to and receives broad direction and oversight from Applied Informatics research group and operates within the University policies, procedures and guidelines.

Major challenges of this role include:

- Negotiating and working collaboratively with the team members, our support staff, VU staff members as well as our VU partners, to develop and maintain trusted working relationships.
- Leading and managing the monitoring of key deliverables of the University’s Strategic Plan, operational plans and related performance against key performance indicators, associated with University and legislative priorities.
- Providing strategic advice on issues and their implications for the University’s strategic and business operations.
- Responding productively to deliver solutions and outcomes in an organisational environment complicated by scale, complexity and external factors.

**This position is located in our Footscray Park campus and is being offered as a full-time 3 year fixed-term opportunity at the Classification of Research Fellow Level B. The salary range for this position is $107,775.36 - $127,982.56 per annum (pro rata) (depending on experience), plus 17% superannuation, working 36.75 hours per week.**

**About You**:

- PhD in Computer Science
- Proven track record in security and algorithm development
- Expertise in designing and implementing intelligent models, particularly in charging scheduling and differential evolution frameworks
- Experience with differential evolution algorithms and cooperative co-evolutionary strategies
- Ability to contribute to project phases: model design, algorithm implementation, and system evaluation with real data
- Potential to take on up to 30% teaching responsibilities within the College.
