**About the role**:
The St Vincent’s Hospital Neurosurgery Department is seeking applicants with appropriate skills and qualifications for appointment as a Visiting Medical Officer to the end of the quinquennium in June 2027. This position requires a neurosurgeon with demonstrated expertise in general/ neurotrauma and mínimally invasive cranial surgery, skull base and complex spinal surgery. The applicant should have Spine fellowship training for enabling management of degenerative and scoliotic deformity. The VMO will work in collaboration with the St Vincent’s Head and Neck Cancer Service.
Applicants should have demonstrated experience and expertise in the use of microsurgical techniques for brain and spinal work, and competence in the provision of open and mínimally invasive spinal surgery (Fellowship trained), cranial surgery (including awake cranial procedures with intra-operative mapping and monitoring), and trauma management in a teaching hospital environment.
The successful applicant will provide three half day elective operating sessions per month primarily to public patients, noting that the number of allocated sessions available may vary over time depending upon resources available, strategic priorities and clinical demand. The successful applicant must work to ensure the numbers of elective waiting list patients do not exceed the National and State waiting time benchmarks or exceed the capacity of the contractually agreed theatre time availability to undertake the wait list cases, in accordance with NSW Health Policy.
Clinical duties include participation in the Neurosurgery on-call roster and the provision of consultative and elective surgery services to patients who present and / or are admitted to/from the Emergency Department. The approximate rate for on-call is one in five.
Postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in neurosurgery is expected.

2. Possess, or be eligible to possess, specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia;
3. Possess Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) with Specialty training in Neurosurgery as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997, plus Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Skull Based Surgery (or equivalent);
4. Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of clinical practice in Neurosurgery, commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position; including demonstrated experience and expertise in the use of microsurgical techniques for brain and spinal work, and competence in the provision of open and mínimally invasive spinal surgery (fellowship trained), cranial surgery, and trauma in a teaching hospital environment;
5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching at specialty registrar, junior medical officer and undergraduate levels;
6. Demonstrated leadership skills that support and foster innovation to create a learning culture, with proven ability to improve the quality of services and patient care outcomes;
7. Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satis
faction and experience;
8. Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment;
