**Fixed term, full-time position for 20 Months**

We are seeking a TERN Surveillance Field Team Lead to be based within the TERN Ecosystem Surveillance team. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) is the national observatory for Australian ecosystems, delivering data streams that enable environmental research and management. TERN’s infrastructure is designed to examine Australian ecosystems and ecosystem processes at different scales from targeted monitoring at the local level, through to surveillance monitoring at regional scales, through to continental scale observation and modelling.

Working under general direction, the TERN Field Lead will lead a team of 4 -6 and is responsible for undertaking biodiversity surveillance field surveys following well established protocols. This includes coordinating a team of Field Officers, assisting the TERN Field Coordinator to plan field trips, overseeing and contributing to preparation of field equipment, vehicles, fuel and camping equipment, and assisting with collection of data, soil samples and plant specimens for delivery to TERN.

When not in the field, the TERN Field Lead will work at the Waite campus at the TERN Surveillance facility. Regular interstate and remote travel, including camping in remote locations for extended periods (up to two weeks) is required.

**To be successful you will need**:

- Extensive demonstrated experience in carrying out ecological surveys, including flora identification and vegetation classification throughout a wide variety of Australian environments.
- Demonstrated experience following and assisting others to follow established survey protocols taking scientific measurements, herbarium quality voucher specimens, and/or soil samples.
- Extensive demonstrated experience undertaking remote area operations, incorporating effective communications, navigation, management of health, safety and wellbeing, and protection of the environment.
- Experience working and leading in a team environment, including remote field locations for extended periods (up to two weeks), and willingness to help others achieve program objectives.
- Experience supervising and providing on-ground training to field staff on ecological survey techniques.
- Experience operating four-wheel-drive vehicles in various terrains, including basic maintenance, or willingness to undertake relevant training.

**Qualification/s**:

- Completion of a degree in a relevant field (science, agricultural science, ecology, environmental studies etc.), or a combination of other levels of training with relevant experience.
- Current first aid qualification (Provide First Aid / Advanced First Aid / Remote Area First Aid), or willingness to undertake relevant training.
- Current C (car) class drivers licence, and experience driving manual vehicles.
