**Position Purpose**

The Laboratory Technician is responsible technical support of nominated teaching laboratory

units in the Biological Sciences with emphasis on Immunology and Microbiology within the

Technical Services Team - College Professional Services.

**About the Work Area**

The Microbiology/Immunology technical team has the responsibility for operating and

maintaining undergraduate teaching labs along with preparing, developing, designing and

constructing experiments. Whether teaching, research or external engagement activities the

group manages the technical requirements that service the needs of the University

community.

**Key Responsibilities/Duties**

1. Primarily support practical components of Immunology and Medical Microbiology units

within Biomedical Science and Laboratory Medicine Courses.

2. Advise and assist in the delivery of Immunology and Microbiology and provide support

with other practical units, for both teaching and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) /

Masters Researchers, as requested.

3. Provide technical expertise and organizational skills in the planning of experiments

within the teaching units, which may include support and assistance to demonstrators

and students during practical laboratories, as required.

4. Provide high quality user training and support of a range of equipment and liaising

with external agencies to maintain and develop knowledge of advances in equipment

and techniques.

5. Comply with safe work practices and maintain compliance of regulations for Good

laboratory Practice standards.

6. Support and promote compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and

procedures, including equity and health & safety.

7. Embody the University’s values within and beyond the University, building equality and

diversity and encouraging social responsibility.

8. Support the delivery of an engaging student experience of which excellence in research

and quality education are fundamental, aligning to College/Office and University

objectives.

9. Work collaboratively and effectively across the University and with central university

professional service functions.

10. Where possible and commensurate with skill and level of appointment undertake

other duties as directed.

**Selection Criteria**

**Essential**

1. Completion of a relevant Tertiary qualification or equivalent combination of

laboratory experience and/or education and training in Immunology, Microbiology,

and cell culture techniques.

2. Demonstrated understanding of the theoretical principles and techniques used in

Immunology and Microbiology, including experience and ability in flow cytometry and

cell culture.

3. Demonstrated ability to work within inventory budgets, and update laboratory

procedures and quality control teaching techniques as directed.
