Position Overview
The Aerial Rescue Operations Officer plays a critical role within the technical crew, skilled in executing Search and Rescue (SAR), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Rappelling, Sling Loading, Passenger Transport, and Winching Operations. This position is accountable to the aircraft captain for the effective management of the aircraft's rear cabin during flight operations.
The role is conducted in various environments, both onshore and offshore, with the shared goal of providing assistance during emergencies. Crew members may face demanding tasks and stressful conditions, with a real possibility of encountering traumatic situations. Whether engaged in SAR or EMS missions, the responsibilities require a high level of preparedness and resilience.
Given the diverse nature of contracts, Aerial Rescue Operations Officers must adapt to varying requirements and successfully manage all aspects of their role. Crews will also need to accommodate different work schedules, including day and night operations throughout the year. Continuous proficiency training is essential, along with maintaining physical fitness and the ability to perform under pressure.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain dual qualifications as an Aerial Rescue Operations Officer and Rescue Crew Officer.
- Comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
- Ensure safe flight operations in accordance with operational manuals and regulations.
- Assist in managing the aircraft's rear cabin during flight.
- Conduct thorough flight and safety briefings.
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of all search and rescue equipment and ensure safe operations.
- Complete necessary pre-flight and post-flight inspections and documentation.
- Prepare the aircraft for flight and conduct post-flight maintenance.
- Report any operational or maintenance safety issues and assist in addressing equipment deficiencies.
- Provide first aid as needed, especially in high-pressure situations.
- Be available to travel to various operational bases as required.
- Successfully complete periodic company fitness assessments.
- Act as a safety advocate, challenging unsafe practices and promoting a culture of safety.
Qualifications, Skills & Attributes
Essential Requirements:
- Current CASA Class II medical certification.
- Current Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen certification (HLTAID015).
- Current First Aid certification (HLTAID011).
- Valid Flight Radiotelephone Operators License.
- CASA approved hoist endorsement under CASR PART 133/13.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Certificate IV in Aviation (CASA compliance).
- Experience in SAR/EMS operations.
- Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (H.U.E.T) and Emergency Breathing Systems (EBS) training.
- SLS Bronze Medallion and Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).
- NVIS qualification and experience in night operations.
- Experience with FLIR imagery systems.
Skills and Experience:
- Possess a current Class 1 driver's license.
- Minimum of 500 hours of aircrew experience.
- Pass company physical fitness assessments as required.
- Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Excellent critical thinking abilities.
- Familiarity with relevant IT systems.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in urgent situations.
