About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legislative Drafter to join our team at the Australian Department of Veterans' Affairs. As a key member of our Legal and Audit Division, you will play a critical role in supporting the lawful implementation of our objectives by advising on legal risk management and providing legal advice, litigation, and dispute resolution services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Draft complex legislative instruments and other types of instruments that effectively achieve policy intent and are easily understood by users.
  • Assist in leading and managing drafting projects, reading and settling the work of other legislative drafters, and providing advice on issues arising from drafting.
  • Contribute to the collective knowledge of the Branch, particularly in relation to drafting practices and statutory interpretation.
  • Deliver other legal services that meet client expectations, taking into account both legal and non-legal risks, professional standards, and the role of DVA.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with business areas while promoting the Legal & Audit Division as DVA's trusted advisor.
Requirements
  • Must have a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree from a recognised Australian tertiary education provider.
  • Must be admitted as a legal practitioner of the High Court or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia and possess a practising certificate.
