Role Overview

The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisor plays a pivotal role in liaising with Aboriginal communities and our project teams, offering specialized guidance on matters related to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title.

This position is responsible for collaborating with various internal stakeholders to evaluate and address heritage impacts effectively.

Furthermore, the advisor will provide expert insights and assistance to project teams, contractors, and Aboriginal representatives concerning stakeholder engagement, cultural heritage management, and land issues within Whitehaven's projects. This ensures compliance with Aboriginal cultural heritage guidelines, policies, and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert guidance to project teams on Aboriginal cultural heritage and Native Title, ensuring adherence to relevant legislation and policies to support project delivery.
  • Lead and advise multidisciplinary project teams, including external contractors and environmental specialists, in identifying and managing Aboriginal cultural heritage and land tenure risks.
  • Provide strategic advice and solutions for project teams and contractors on sensitive cultural heritage issues through collaborative engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders.
  • Conduct site inspections and audits of Aboriginal cultural heritage management plans to ensure compliance with legislative standards.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Native Title and Aboriginal cultural heritage legislation, continuously adapting management approaches to emerging trends.
  • Manage interactions regarding Aboriginal cultural heritage with relevant agencies and stakeholders, including local Aboriginal Land Councils and cultural heritage organizations.

Qualifications and Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of Aboriginal cultural heritage, land rights, and native title frameworks.
  • Identification as an Aboriginal person, accepted by the community, with a strong connection to Aboriginal heritage.
  • Relevant qualifications or proven experience in stakeholder engagement and management.
  • Exceptional project management and communication skills, with a history of influencing cooperation among senior stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal cultural heritage and economic development issues, with experience in policy implementation to enhance Aboriginal employment outcomes.
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel as required.
