About the Role

We are seeking highly skilled and experienced legal professionals to join our team at the Australian Department of Veterans' Affairs. As a Legislative Drafter, you will play a critical role in supporting the development of legislation and instruments that effectively achieve policy intent and are easily understood by users.

As a Senior Legislative Drafter, you will lead and manage drafting projects, provide guidance and advice to instructors, and contribute to the collective knowledge of the Branch. You will also be responsible for supervising and supporting junior staff, developing their legislative drafting skills and other relevant knowledge.

Key Responsibilities
  • Draft complex or sensitive legislative instruments and other types of instruments that effectively achieve policy intent and are easily understood by users.
  • Assist the Principal Legislative Drafter in leading and managing drafting projects.
  • Read and settle the work of other legislative drafters.
  • Assist instructors to draft high-quality explanatory statements for legislative instruments.
  • Give advice to instructors about issues arising from drafting of instruments.
  • Assist policy and program areas in instructing the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
  • Prepare and review other complex legal documents.
  • Actively contribute to the collective knowledge of the Branch, particularly in relation to drafting practices and statutory interpretation.
  • Deliver other legal services that meet client expectations, taking into account both legal and non-legal risks, professional standards, and the role of DVA.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with business areas while promoting the Legal & Audit Division as the DVA's trusted advisor.
  • Actively develop your professional legal expertise through participation in development, training, and study opportunities, and meet Continuing Legal Education requirements and other expectations.
  • Supervise and support junior staff, including by setting clear direction of work priorities and monitoring workflow, and developing legislative drafting skills and other relevant knowledge of the junior staff.
  • Support leadership of the section and the branch, including through promoting a positive working environment and contributing to corporate leadership activities.
Requirements
  • Must have a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree (or equivalent) from a recognised Australian tertiary education provider.
  • Must be admitted as a legal practitioner (however described) of the High Court or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia and must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a practising certificate.
