About the Role

As a senior software architect, you will lead the design and delivery of high-quality, scalable, and innovative software solutions in support of the Australian Defence Force. This is a key leadership position requiring strong technical acumen, agile delivery expertise, and a proven ability to manage and mentor high-performing software teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and oversee the implementation of software capability as a program discipline across the Mission Systems, including integration of software products into the broader system architecture.
  • Ensure software products meet required assurance and assessment standards by applying appropriate quality processes, configuration management, and state-of-the-art software engineering techniques across the development lifecycle.
  • Provide technical guidance and architectural oversight to ensure scalable, maintainable, and robust solutions.
  • Establish and maintain a unified software development environment and toolset to enable efficient, high-quality output from the development team.
  • Leverage Digital Engineering capabilities, including Model-Based Systems Engineering and analysis tools, to improve development efficiency and capability.
  • Liaise with systems engineers and other stakeholders to ensure software aligns with allocated system requirements and adheres to all relevant standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
  • Promote best practices in software development including code quality, testing, documentation, and continuous improvement of processes, tools, and workflows.
  • Oversee requirements validation and verification, including active participation in testing and defect resolution, while identifying and managing technical risks.
  • Support customer engagement activities such as presentations, reviews, and workshops, and report on project progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership.
  • Ensure delivery of comprehensive, high-quality software artefacts and support documentation that meet internal and external expectations.
  • Drive initiatives to reduce technical debt, improve system performance, and ensure alignment of all software development activities with business objectives, timelines, and quality standards.
About You

You will be a highly skilled and experienced software architect with a strong background in Microsoft technologies such as C#, .NET, WPF, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Azure DevOps. You will have a solid understanding of development and integration environments, continuous delivery approaches, and configuration management.

You will also have experience working in regulated industries such as defence, rail, or automotive, and knowledge of assurance and lifecycle standards including DO-178, MIL-STD-498, ISO 15288:2015, and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2017.

You must be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance.
