Scientific Assistant Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Scientific Assistant to join our team in a laboratory setting.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  1. Process clinical specimens with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accurate identification and transfer of data throughout the data entry process.
  2. Accurately and timely enter all specimens into the Laboratory Information System, including patient identification, referrer information, billing, and site details.
  3. Adhere to departmental quality system procedures and occupational health and safety policies to uphold laboratory standards and ensure personal and others' health and safety.
  4. Deliver exceptional customer service by maintaining a professional appearance and interacting positively with customers.
  5. Provide positive interactions for test add-ons, laboratory information, and results notifications.
  6. Undertake test send-away tasks to ensure accurate and appropriate packaging of specimens for referral laboratories.
  7. Practice in accordance with best practice, legal, ethical, and professional standards.
  8. Ensure adequate stock and equipment management processes are in place to meet customer needs and minimize waste.
  9. Manage specimen storage and movement between Central Specimen Reception and laboratory locations to prevent spoilage.
  10. Perform administration and general maintenance activities as required for the laboratory location.
  11. Assist scientific staff with routine tasks as needed for the laboratory location.
  12. Perform additional tasks as directed by relevant supervisors.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Sound knowledge of Central Specimen Reception duties.
  • Experience in a pathology laboratory with specimen handling and preparation.
  • A high level of customer experience skills to ensure ongoing customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work autonomously and co-operatively in a team, liaising with colleagues and supervisors, and exhibiting strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to model and promote Mater values.
  • Flexibility to work on a 24/7 roster after suitable training.
