About the Role

A career as a Navy Clearance Diver with the New Zealand Defence Force offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to serve your country. As a Clearance Diver, you will be part of a highly skilled team responsible for searching and disposing of explosive ordnance, conducting underwater engineering tasks, and providing support for various military operations.

The role requires a high level of physical fitness, stamina, and mental toughness. You will need to be able to work well under pressure, think critically, and make sound decisions in high-stress situations. The job also demands strong teamwork and communication skills, as you will be working closely with other divers, sailors, and officers to achieve mission objectives.

As a Clearance Diver, you can expect to undergo rigorous training to develop your diving skills, including mine countermeasures, clearance diving, and underwater engineering. You will also receive instruction on explosives handling and disposal, as well as basic first aid and firefighting procedures.

Once trained, you will be deployed on various missions, both domestically and internationally, to provide Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) services and support other naval operations. Your duties may include:

  • Searching and disposing of explosive ordnance, such as mines, bombs, and grenades
  • Conducting underwater engineering tasks, such as maintenance and repairs of ships and equipment
  • Providing EOD support for land-based operations, such as search and rescue missions
  • Participating in exercises and training activities to maintain and enhance your skills

Requirements and Qualifications

To become a Clearance Diver, you must meet certain requirements and qualifications, including:

  • Being a minimum of 17 years old upon entry
  • Having completed at least three years of secondary education
  • Passing the RNZN Diver Selection Board
  • Meeting the minimum entry fitness standards
  • Being medically fit for service
