Census Field Operations Coordinator

We are seeking a skilled Census Field Operations Coordinator to join our team in remote areas of Australia. As a key member of our operations team, you will play a vital role in ensuring high-quality field operations in regional and remote areas.

About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an experienced project coordinator with a background in operational management. You will be responsible for managing daily quality checks, overseeing logistical activities, and leading small teams responsible for Census collection activities within your area of responsibility.

You will recruit, train, and manage a small team of field staff, develop, update, and review work plans for your area of responsibility, connect with the community, establish networks, and maintain those relationships. Your responsibilities also include providing training, planning, and administrative support to your teams, promoting participation in the Census within the community, and working collaboratively with our other Census and ABS staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage daily quality checks and oversee logistical activities.
  • Recruit, train, and manage a small team of field staff.
  • Develop, update, and review work plans for your area of responsibility.
  • Connect with the community, establish networks, and maintain those relationships.
  • Promote participation in the Census within the community.
  • Work collaboratively with our other Census and ABS staff.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and manage daily Work Health and Safety requirements/activities for your team, including for any travelling in remote areas.
  • Gather support for the Census from Local Government and community organisations, as well as key service providers.

This role requires you to have an understanding of and ability to communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. Applicants who live in or have worked in the nominated area will be highly regarded.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • A proven track record of working with or advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Strong local area knowledge and the ability to read and navigate maps.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work independently, prioritise tasks with limited guidance, and make decisions independently.
  • Strong project management skills, particularly in an operational setting.
  • Leading or managing a team, including remote teams, in a busy, high-volume environment with tight deadlines.
  • Skills in people management, including recruitment, training, and implementing WHS practices within a team.
