Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service seeks a dedicated and experienced Criminal Lawyer to join our team in Mt Isa. As a Legal Practitioner, you will provide expert information to clients and external stakeholders, relying on the State-wide resources of the Principal Legal Officer and the Director of Law (Criminal Law).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing high-level client services in Criminal Law proceedings
  • Ensuring exemplary case management standards
  • Working knowledge of the Youth Justice Act 1992 and the Criminal Code 1899
  • Ability to work after hours if necessary
  • Willingness to assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' training/education

Selection Criteria:

  • Alignment to the values and vision of ATSILS
  • Admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (or eligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate
  • Capacity to provide high-level client services and data management
  • Proven high level of professional service in all aspects of Criminal Law
  • Confidence in and knowledge of legislation

ATSILS is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that delivers innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland. We are a specialist Through Care service complementing our legal services, with 300 staff and 50 years of experience.

We are fully government funded, and this Legal role is tied to ongoing funding, currently set to 30 June 2025. You will have frequent opportunities to provide expert information directly to clients and external stakeholders about client matters.
