Uncovering the Forgotten Past: A PhD Scholarship in Indigenous History

The project aims to investigate the cross-cultural encounters between First Nations people and Asian voyagers in Australia's Gulf of Carpentaria through historical and ethnographic research. The study will be conducted in close collaboration with the Yanyuwa Aboriginal community.
A Monash University PhD scholarship is available for an excellent candidate with a strong academic track record in Indigenous history, archaeology, anthropology, or museum studies. The selected individual will have the opportunity to contribute to a wider archaeological and ethnographic research project while pursuing their own distinct PhD research.
The applicant should possess competence in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian Honour's or Master's degree with a significant research component and first-class honours.
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher who can work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skills. A background in Indigenous studies, cultural heritage management, or a related field would be highly desirable.
The research will focus on the following key areas:
- Historical records and archaeological findings related to First Nations people and Asian voyagers
- Methodologies for conducting cross-cultural research
- Collaboration with Indigenous communities and stakeholders
The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training and support from our experienced research team. They will also have access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources, including archival collections and cutting-edge analytical equipment.
Upon completion of the PhD program, the candidate will be well-equipped to pursue a career in academia, research, or industry, with a strong foundation in Indigenous studies and cultural heritage management.
