This permanent, full-time role offers an opportunity to join the Legal Regulation team as a Senior Investigations Solicitor.

About the Team

The Professional Standards, Legal Regulation Department undertakes co-regulatory functions delegated by the Office of the Legal Services Commissioner regarding lawyers in NSW. The Investigations Team is responsible for investigating complaints about lawyer conduct and suitability issues under Chapters 3 and 5 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW). Investigations Solicitors within the Team perform statutory duties under the Uniform Law.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct expeditious investigations into lawyer complaints under Chapter 5 and uphold fairness and impartiality according to the Uniform Law.
  • Analyse suitability issues relating to a lawyer's fitness to hold a practising certificate under Chapter 3 of the Uniform Law.
  • Evaluate trust investigation reports and make informed recommendations to the Director, Legal Regulation, and the Council of the Law Society of NSW.
  • Manage complex cases, including complaints, suitability issues, and trust investigations, actively identifying key conduct issues and critically analysing materials provided.
  • Examine evidence, draft relevant statutory notices, conduct legal research, report on complaints to the Professional Conduct Committee, and provide recommendations in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with Uniform Law requirements.
  • Draft concise and well-researched memoranda to Council regarding suitability issues.
  • Liaise with complainants, solicitors, the Professional Conduct Committee, Council, the NSW Legal Services Commissioner, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to policy and educational goals, including legislative and legal development.

About You

  • Hold admission to the Roll of Lawyers and be eligible to hold a practising certificate.
  • Possess at least 5 years of post-qualification experience.
  • Previous investigatory, regulatory, or administrative law experience is desirable.
  • Have sound knowledge of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) and related legislation.
  • Familiarise yourself with solicitor's trust accounting practices.
  • Proven ability to express yourself clearly in correspondence and reports.
  • Able to plan and organise yourself and others to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office and proficient in email and internet applications.
  • Will to set clear goals and regulate your behaviour accordingly.
  • Ability to use information, knowledge, and experience to form judgements.
  • A commitment to honesty, treating others fairly, and openness regarding conflicts of interest.

Salary: $120,000 - $180,000 per annum
